Does anyone know why Tony Frangieh, the Maronite militia leader in 1970s Lebanon, was killed by his own Phalangists? I thought the Maronites were against the Muslims during the Lebanese Civil War, not each other...

The Lebanese civil war was never muslim vs. Christian, it was political factions that had a majority from one sect against other political factions with a majority of another sect and often people from the same sect fighting against each other while allying themselves with their sworn enemies to achieve political domination.

Tony Frangieh was killed because he was a challenge to the fascist phalangists, and they were fascists having been modelled after the Spanish Phalangists and the blackshirts, supremacy on the Maronite side which meant control of the state.

So it looks like the Maronites are no different than the mafia in movies/tv shows, caught in a power struggle that ends in people getting "whacked" only to succumb to their own greed. I had always thought it was a religious dispute but I was way off.

I have been looking at other history forums and I found this about Maronites attacking each other:

"Up until Amin Gemayel ascended to the presidency in Beirut Israel truly believed that it could count on the Maronites to go the long haul. The younger Gemayel brother gave Israel a rude awakening. It was not rocket science after all, they butcher each other so how could our leader expect anything better towards Israel? Breaking into Geaga's villa, raping his pregnant wife, carving her embryo out and making her suck her own removed breasts as she died, and making Samir watch? Maronites are no different than any other Arab group, they play just as hard."

I thought Samir Geagea was responsible for the Tony Frangieh ambush at the villa and was convicted for his role and spent 11 years in jail in the 1990s. I can't find anything written about Geagea's villa being attacked. Did it really happen or did the other guy mix up his facts?
