I won't be a hater, but to make one comment: unless you know about baseball (which I don't) it is immensely boring on the telly. I suppose the same would be true of soccer to the uninitiated.

I read this article and instantly thought of this thread. I couldn't possibly have written a more elegant piece on the game that I love.

If there is one thing I might find to disagree with, it is the following:

"One could, I suppose, conclude that baseball is primarily Western in its religious orientation, on the shaky grounds that the game as we know it has a somewhat eschatological logic: Within the miniature cosmos of the park, the game must be played down to its final verdict and cannot end before judgment is passed. No one, I think, doubts that Yogi's most oracular formula, it ain't over till it's over, is a perfectly condensed statement of what for us are the game's highest spiritual and dramatic stakes. And yet the Japanese will play to a draw with equanimity, content at the last simply to let go, so that all forces can reach equilibrium, and I do not believe their version of the game is necessarily any less elegant or profound than ours."

While I find the cultural differences in the game very interesting, I would offer that a baseball game that doesn't end with either a winner or loser, really isn't a baseball game at all. You see, I happen to agree -- and I find it hard, now, to see how I could have missed it -- that baseball has metaphysical assumptions, and the eschatological charcater of the game is one of the defining elements to it.

Anyhow, the full article can be found here: http://www.firstthings.com/article/2010/07/a-perfect-game

I encourage anyone who might have an open mind about America's Pastime to give it a read.

Absolutely, what you have in that case is practice.

Everyone thinks Lee will go to the Yankees.  All the rumors from sources closer to him indicate he might stay with Texas or go to the Nationals, of all teams!
