A question: What is it that would motivate an (apparently) significant segment of a community to murder a handicapped 11 year old girl, because she may have burned a religious book, perhaps on purpose, perhaps not? What combination of fear, ignorance, xenaphopia, tribalism, or who knows what is at work in compelling people, in 2012, to kill those that even slightly challenge their security in the belief of myth and magic? How did the middle ages live on into the 21st century?

A mob, and apparently a sizable and vocal segment of society in Pakistan, urged death as a punishment for blasphemy. She was not killed, but arrested by the police. But even the slightly more moderate Pakistan government proscribes a sentence of up to life imprisonment for this "crime". Something has gone seriously off the sociological and psychological rails for angry mobs to demand death, or even a prison sentence, for children (most certainly) and even for adults who speak or act out against the prevailing myths, IMO. I just wonder what these factors are.
