Listening to a radio interview with Alan Greenspan a couple of days ago, in which he was flogging his new book, "The Map and the Territory", I was left with a sense of amazement about how such small people can find themsevles in such influencial positons.

Commenting on the financial crash of 2008, he offered the surprising theory that all that would have been needed to handle things in such situations was more bank capital. Never mind shady investment products, underhanded financial officers, the real estate bubble, and deregulation that sparked one of the most voracious spasms of greed in history- just, he suggests, raise the fractional reserve amounts for banks. That is like saying if there is an arsonist about, well, just buy a few more fire trucks.

In another rather amazing statement, he admitted that there is more to society than economic theory. That is, psychology and sociology also come into play, and so math is not sufficient for planning at the highest levels of society. He quaintly refers to such areas of human behavior as "animal spirits".

How do guys like this make it to the top?

Captain:
Afaik, there are two main methods.

1. The Peter Principle-An observation that in an organizational hierarchy, every employee will rise or get promoted to his or her level of incompetence; and

2. The Marijuana Principle-The harder one sucks, the higher he gets.

It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.
