Well folks, am looking for a good general history of the southern Africa region, particularly one that explores white minority rule in Rhodesia and South Africa (But something that also examines the Angolan Civil War and other events in the region too) A general economic and political history. Cheers. Any recommendations welcome.

I'd recommend Peter Godwin's "When a crocodile eats the sun" for what Zimbabwe was like before Mugabe and after. As for the Angolan Civil War, Pete Nortje's 32 Battalion is dry reading, basically a recount of all the unit' battles, but it does contain some interesting observations of the Cubans in Angola, and it is one of the very few books written by an Afrikaaner veteran of what was essentially a Black Angolan battalion of the SADF. (A unit founded by the brother of a leading Afrikaaner opponent of Aparteid)

Cris Cocks "Fire Force" gives an anti-aparteid (but not militantly so) White's view of a Rhodesian Light Infantry veteran.

This might sound ridiculous, but I'd be interested in reading an Afrikaan nationalist apologia for apartheid. Nothing Nazi mind, but would like to understand the mentalities better than the films and the documentaries demonstrate. Cheers for the recommendations.

Parnell, you need to find the writings of Hendrik Verwoerd to find the apologia. The roots of apartheid pre-date him, but he was the one who defined and systematized it. On paper, they saw South Africa as consisting of Nations who belonged to specific areas based upon ethnicity. Thus the "Bantustans". Legally, the Bantu belonged to nations outside where most of them lived and worked, and thus without the rights of full citizens within White areas.

There are still Afrikaaners who lobby for their own reserve, literally their own republic, within South Africa.

Years ago, while preparing to go to South Africa (the assignment fell through) I read an excellent book on Apartheid's history in English, but forty years of cobwebs on the brain preclude me from remembering the title.
