The Greek historian Herodotus once called Egypt "the gift of the Nile."  This river, the longest in the world, flows north from central Africa and empties into the Mediterranean Sea more than 4,000 miles away.  Without the water provided by the Nile, all of Egypt would be a desert, because it receives so little rainfall.

The history of Ancient Egypt spans the period from the early predynastic settlements of the northern Nile Valley to the Roman conquest by Augustus Caesar in 30 BC.  The Period of the Pharaohs is dated from around 3200 BC, when Lower and Upper Egypt became a unified state, lasting until the country fell under Greek rule in 332 BC.

So dynastic rule spans from Menes to Cleopatra VII? That's a pretty long history, with 39 dynasties, and hundreds of Pharaohs. Ying Yang
