Could the recent period of relative cooperative relationships inside the Eruopean-North American sphere become just a short exception in history? Since most often in history rivalry, hostilities etcetera was the order of the day between peoples there, and there is some elements of conflict today too?  Another reason there could be a possibillity of breakup could be either the dominant part (US) or the other would be less interested in continuing the recent order.

There might be periods of colder relations to come now and again, but to be honest, the US and Europe have too many common interests for hostilities to be a likely scenario. Truth is, both blocs are relying on each other for civil and military operations and most likely will continue to do so.

I can see a more likely scenario of NATO finally running out of patience with Russia (read Putin) and forcing an end to Russias expansionism.

The major conflict on the horizon I see as being the world putting an end to Chinas South China Sea adventure, and at the same time possible confrontation with North Korea which would back China.

As a side note, I wouldn't be surprised to sea a restructuring of the UN making it militarily proactive.
God created 2nd Lieutenants for the amusement of Senior NCO's.

Oh come on guys. Every time a subject like this crops up it's all doom, gloom, and all out war. Politicians are not shy of expending their populations if they have to but at the end of the day they also get remembered for brokering peaceful terms. Neither Russia nor the West want to go to war with each other and whilst there might be periods of sharp words, sanctions, and meetings at Camp David, hostilities are simply too dangerous with nuclear weapons owned by both factions. That's why World War Three never happened, however close we got to it.
