In the bible the Assyrians are depicted as fierce invaders who committed terrible atrocities. With their iron weapons and siege machines they overwhelmed and enslaved their nieghbors (who still used bronze).
Did the Assyrians deserve thier fearsome reputation or is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

The collapse of the "Bronze Age" can not be ascribed to the "Assyrians" since such took place long before the advent of Tiglath Pileser III and such actually ignores the lengthy history of "Assyria" as a regional entity even in the Bronze Age. Since you reference the "Bible" understand that when the Assyrians went after Israel, the forces of Ahab were also utilizing iron!

Assyrian success, except from military qualities was also based on the fear they spread. You should be a bit sceptic to the bibles descriptions since it does probably not present a balanced view about them. It is intimidating though when you read about the threats they directed to their enemies like for example that they will eat their excrements and stuff like that.

Like DrGonzaga said, the iron age was already there when Assyrians mauled their opponents. However, their siege techniques were popular until mediaeval times and that should be a good credit to them.

Quote Did the Assyrians deserve thier fearsome reputation ...?

Oh hell yes, they review Assyrian military tactics in military academies to this day AFAIK (or they certainly did in the 60s).

So their success was due to their use of terror rather than advanced technology? News of the Assyrians' fierce reputation may have persuaded enemies to surrender

No they did have advanced technology in terms of siege equipment. In a face to face fight their opponents had iron weapons, but when they were "safe" behind the walls the Assyrians could get them out from their hole and the battle was over. If the Acheans & Danaoi for example had those technologies in the Trojan war, it would probably not last that long.

Of course the fiercesome reputation made the soldiers of the other army to surrender easier, since the terms of surrendering were favorable. Otherwise, the consequences were horrifying e.g the prisoners were made to eat their excrements and then beheaded! Sick

They were fearsome and skillful. All their neighbors were subjugated or made a tributary.
