I have been watching a facinating tv series about the convoys and the Battle of the Atlantic, an area of ww2 history I previously knew little about.

I always thought the destroyers had the upper hand but the series showed how succesful the wolf-pack actually were and how they might even have won if either a) Hitler had given the U-boats more resources early on, or b) the US entry into the war had been delayed another year or so.

To those who know this topic what are your views on the Battle in the Atlantic and how it was fought? For example was Admiral Dernitz a good strategist or was he unrealistic?

Excuse my late response, I have only just joined. There are books written about the battle of the Atlantic so I won't go anywhere near the full answer with a couple of paragraphs. Firstly I would point out that convoys did not have all destroyer escorts, there weren't enough so they built smaller, slower frigates, sloops & corvettes which Nicholas Monserrat referred to as the "smallest ships". The quality of the escorts increased as the war progressed, especially after the US joined the war. The defeat of the U-boats was mainly due to -: 1. The cracking of the Enigma code and therefore the ability to-: read messages to and from them, divert convoys, direct hunter/killer groups.  2. The development of 10cm radar (so aircraft could find them night and day). 3. The closing of the "air gap" in the Atlantic  4. The entry of the US into the European war. 5. The development of anti submarine weapons (depth charges, Squid, Hedgehog & homing torpedoes).

I think Doenitz was a smart guy who recognized opportunities - like the creation of the "wolf pack". I think he lost more than he gained when he instructed his U-boats to fight aircraft on the surface. Ultimately his U-boats had the highest casualty rate of any service and he just couldn't keep up with the superiority of his opponents, not being unrealistic.
