What do you consider different ethnic groups?  For example, black American southerners are different that black American northerners, (urban), are they different ethnic groups?  Becoming different ethnic groups? or what?  The definition of black America is too much held in hostage to black urban life, rap and gangsterism.  The supposed "authentic" black American experience.

As far as black American ethnicity goes, I think that the descendants of the early Black people who were brought over in the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s as slaves are considered African-Americans. Black people from the Caribbean usually go by the ethnicity of their homeland (Jamaican, Trinidadian, Barbadian, Cuban, Puerto-Rican, Haitian, Dominican, etc.). And black people from Africa usually go by the ethnicity of their homeland (Ghanaian, Nigerian, Kenyan, etc.).

Yes, but are the cultural differences between black Americans from a northern urban environment in contrast to black Americans of a southern rural environment significant?  The whole gangsta scene over looks and minimizes people like Condolezza Rice as somehow not "quite" black.

I think that after the first few generations, black people tend to look upon themselves as Americans, although perhaps Jamaican or Ghanaian Americans.  Does Colin Powell look at himself as a Jamaican, or as an American?

Colin Powell probably looks upon himself as American as apple pie, as he should.  He could have been president and the first black president if he had wanted to, his wife has some mental-emotional issues and probably would not have been able to take it if he had done that.  Your wife, or the Presidency, he made the right choice as far as I am concerned.

Condolezza Rice originally went to college in order to try to become a classical pianist.  She is good, but she found out that she is not _that_ good that she could do it for a living, so she went into politics and Russian studies.  I have heard that her Russian studies did not really give her and the W. Bush White House a good background for dealing with Iraq and post-cold war politics.  She does however, still play the piano occasionally for benefit performances.  She is what friends and I at the coffeehouse call "scary-smart."  So smart it is scary.  Problem with scary-smart people is they often loose the dimwitted in their speeches.  I would vote for her if she ran, but I don't think she would, and I don't think she would get far because she wouldn't be catering to the masses.
