Any thoughts? The idea of these spheres being the proof for a mason to show his skill makes a lot of sense. Wondering if the limited area where these spheres are found in Britain means that there was  ceremony around carving or using the spheres. The symbols are found all over the world. Some one in the comments suggested it might be from the very first human groups.

The Mysterious Ancient Spheres

Four hundred and twenty geometric stone spheres have been found in the vicinity of Neolithic stone circles in Northern Scotland, with 169 coming from Aberdeenshire alone. Outside Scotland, examples have been found in Ireland at Ballymena, and in England at Durham, Cumbria, Lowick and Bridlington. One was recently spotted by the author over 6,000 miles away that came from an important megalithic pyramid site in South Americ

Across the Pond

On the other side of the Atlantic, near the incredible megalithic pyramid site of Tiwanaku, a solitary and unique stone sphere was discovered, alongside identical spiral carvings like those we find in Neolithic Britain (and Malta, New Zealand etc). I visited the Tiwanaku museum in La Paz, as part of the annual Megalithomania tour with Brien Foerster in November 2014. On display was something that took my breath away. It was one of the Scottish stone spheres! It has six knobs on it; the most common style found in Scotland (around 200 in total) and the size and style matched their transatlantic fellow masons eerily perfectly. How did this find its way 6,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, down the Amazon, and into the highlands of Bolivia?a.

I believe that there is a lot that modern science has yet to explain.

Around the world there are many artifacts which, one would have thought, would have taken modern technology to make, technology that science has yet to discover or explain.

I can only think, in relation to these balls, that someone painstakingly sat and carved them, with what, I don't know. What they represent, I also don't know.
It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.

Urm.....  They aren't spherical.....  But, no I don't know what they are.

We like to think ancients and other cultures are transparent, but they had techniques and tools that we are ignorant of.  Like what?  Well, if I could tell you, then we wouldn't be ignorant of it, would we.  But, there are certain granulation techniques on gold, that we don't know how they did it.  In the renovation of the Parthenon, they discovered marks from a specialized chisel, which we recreated from the marks.  More efficient for doing the job than what we had.

Well they're based on a "ball shape".
As I've maintained over the years, we don't know enough still to discount an alien intervention, or an ancient civilisation more intelligent than we are, that is, if you concede that humans are intelligent.
