Right in the middle of the Hundred Years' War came the 42 year reign of Charles VI. Not quite 12 when he became king, his early reign was dominated by his power hungry uncles. He took control for just four years before falling into a state of insanity, inherited through his mother, magnified by the fact that his parents were closely related and passed through his daughter to Henry VI of England. By the end of his reign, France was it tatters and had two kings. Only a peasant girl could save the throne of his son, Charles VII.

Charles VI went through a stage of believing that he was made of glass and that if people came too near him he would break. Thus he insisted that iron rods should be inserted into his clothing to prevent him from breaking.
