Chile has become the first South American country to join the OECD. Long recognised as economically at the forefront of development in the continent, she now joins the international rich kids club.

And why don't I have a link to this story? I discovered it on wikipedia, and none of the local internet news networks like new.com.au have anything on it. I guess that says something about their priorities, ignoring boring but important international news but happy to make front page stuff a boy getting hit by a surfboard. In fact, I just checked an it doesn't even appear that ninemsn.com.au even has a world news section! Screw this, I am going back to the BBC.

Well, that makes sense. Chile today has half the income per capita of a developed country, and keep growing.  I have no doubt we will be considered a developed country in 30 or 50 years more, at most.

There is many risks, though. We are starting to attract immigration from our neighbour poor countries, and I bet that will produce conflicts in the long term. On the other hand, we are starting to suffer the same demographic problems that affect developed countries.

Sometimes I wonder if development is such an ideal world after all. Yes, now we have more material things than the generation of my father (born in 1915), and I bet my children will witness a real developed country. But some times I remember that when I was a child, the house was full of relatives and friends, people singing, playing guitar and reciting poetry. Today, with the cable and Internet, I see people works a lot more and hardly has time for fun.
