Hi everyone. This is my first time here, but I have a important research question to ask you all. How long would it take a German male to get his Citizenship, if he took them out or filed in 1879? That's all the information I have. Born in Germany. "Took out his citizenship papers"for the U.S. in Sept 1879. He entered through New York.
Thank you, Dan |

The American Party wanted to limit immigration and put forward a policy of twenty one year wait for citizenship in the mid to late 1800's. They more or less got their way for ten years until the Civil War.
There were increasing limits on who was allowed in as swathes of German and Irish settlers arrived to escape issues at home. The Chinese Exclusion Act prevented immigrants from that origin arriving at all. Those considered unsuitable such as the diseased, mentally impaired, or regarded as culturally dangerous were also refused entry. Entry to the United States had previously been administered by the various states themselves, but 1875 it became a federal responsibility. For the United States, I think this is more relevant today in that some people would like to pretend that we (US) have always been accepting and totally open to immigrants, thus implying that President Trump, along with his base, are an aberration. There are many citizens, particularly the rural and blue collar, who feel left behind, and rightfully resent funds going foreign non-citizens. Even the debate on what to call them, "illegal aliens" or "undocumented workers" shows a certain tone deafness from the left concerning who is and who ought to be, properly, part of our society. Being from Colorado, I have a favorable opinion about illegals in general, I think that they have a good work ethic, but I also think that immigration issues are an issue for citizens.
Caldrail, I am curious about what _culturally dangerous_ means. I mean, both practically (historically) and technically.

IMHO, when the influx of migrants reaches such proportions that the culture of the receiving nation is being changed, that would be culturally dangerous.
For example, in the UK, there are so many people whose origins are African, Indian or Pakistani, that the whole culture of some areas is now like a non-English ghetto, people speaking other than English and adhering to a culture which does not fit with UK norms, and the English are being made to conform to the new comers cultures. Totally wrong.

Like the world wide drug problem, and the US Gun Laws, nothing. The horse has bolted.
