The oligarchy has been reshuffled in order to maintain a veneer of legitimacy. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.

I say that we, the proletariat, rise up and smash our oppressors!

I would've thought you'd be pleased with two Australians and a fellow Texan on the council Buckshot?

I propose our first order of buisness is to make proper hats compulsory. No more of these useless baseball caps, if it doesn't double as an Umbrella it's not for putting on your head.

Bob Katter has a proper hat.

Was the hat a gift or is he trying to make some sort of statement? Are there other Australians who wear their hats shaped in a similar style as he does?

You should see the council dining hall, chandeliers and furniture crafted from the bones of fallen forum trolls, pitchers of wine made from the fermented tears of long imprisoned spammers....

Omar, shame on you bringing that man's likeness onto our beloved forum LOL

This hat being worn is distinctively Australian and called the akubra. It is a common enough feature in rural areas. Being protective of the sun and providing the eyes with good shielding from glare, it is useful for agrarian and pastoral workers. I had one as a kid on the farm.

Bob Katter is the Federal MP for a rural constituency in Queensland. Whether he wears the hat out of habit, out of political expediency to appeal to his constituency, or to more prominently represent rural interests - it remains open to question. So far as I am aware he is the only Federal MP to wear such attire as a matter of course.

At the last election a minority government was formed, which gave non-party independent MPs like Katter a massive say in how the country is run. The Labor party needed the backings from rural, independent MPs to form government. Katter was one of those. Although he chose not to partner himself with Labor, his prominence during the three week negotiation to form government and the knowledge that the government is weak and dependent on the support of independents has kept Katter in the spotlight.

Thanks Constantine. I just thought it looked like such an odd style of shape for an Australian to wear.  He wears his hat like a North Texan would shape theirs.

It has occurred to me previously that the fashions adopted by the two peoples, quite independently of one another, are strikingly similar.

It's a case of convergent evolution. Two peoples which are both of European descent, working under a sun and heat their ancestors were not evolved for, doing pretty much the same job (raching/droving - which are both forms of livestock rearing), in an environment where you looked out for yourself and your fellows independent of government support.

I most seriously doubt they developed independently at all.

Actually I agree. While the name akubra has come to mean all Australian wide brim hats, strictly speaking Katters hat is not an Akubra. They are made from rabbit fur with rigid flat (or nearly flat) brims.
However, Katters hat is a style that is frequently worn in Outback and Far North regions of Australia. It is not at all worn in the South East region where hats are usually the Akubra, Barmah, or "Cricket Hat" styles. Katter's Far North style does look very Texan.

I am, very pleased indeed, but Mr Northman was teasing Parnel about a moderator Position. I think I should simply skip over being a Moderator and proceed directly to chairman of the council. All in favor say Aye..1..2..3...NOW.

LOL Yup - the crickets are quite deafening today, aren't they?

Anyway. no one can become a council member, let alone chair it, without being a mod first. Unless, of course, i were to receive a nice little bribe of, ahem- let's say perhaps... six figures. cough-cough  I would consider that sufficient motivation for putting in a good word Wink
