When I was 3 years old, my mother would tell me stories of the old ways, before even the fall of the Ming Dynasty. Every night, she would be outside for hours, even the water clock was suprising when I saw it while she was outside. One night, I decided to follow her outside. When she saw me, she invited me to sit next to her on the rock in the field. She sat there for hours not speaking. I finally asked her why she went out here every night. In english translation, she said, " I always come out here to count the stars. I make sure there are non extra. If there is, either someone has died or will die in the night."

The nights of the Japanese invasions, we counted the stars together. There were thousands of new stars and we recieved letters from Nanking, Shanghai, and Hsinking of relatives dying, we even had to help deliver other letters to nearby families. From then on and to this day, I still make sure there are no extra stars.
