When one read the biographies of certain saints one really start to get afraid. It seems that the church through the ages has appointed some really weird and twisted people as Saints.

For example we have those medieval saints suffering from eating disorder and a perverted desire to eat the most disgusting things- As these:

Quote Both Angela of Foligno (1248–1309) and Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) were reportedly anorexia mirabilis sufferers. They both refused food, but drank the pus from the sores of the sick. Angela of Foligno is reported to have said it was as "sweet as the Eucharist", and also to have eaten the scabs and lice from those same patients, though precious little else.

But even worse is the elevation of genocidal missionaries as Junipero Serra, the executioner of the California indigenous people at the glorified labor camps that is called the California missions.

Also Francis Xavier has been elevated after his participation in genocidal activieties in Goa, in India in the 16th century. The catholic church has a strange habit of elevating some bizzarre madmen (and women) to sainthood.

And here I thought the topic was going to be about American football and New Orlean's favorite sports team! Guess I should have known better given that the thread was mused out by the Anti-Penguin, Carch! Well, if we are going to venture into gratuitous calumny of religious figures, why not discuss the quirks of secular Swedes such as the selfish and violent megalomaniac Karl XII of Sweden...hmm he never married did he?

PS: BTW Carch, who do you regularly "hang around" with?

Most Saints were abnormal, because only through such abnormality could the zealous behaviours occur which the Catholic church ascribed to sainthood. The Orthodox and Protestant churches were a bit different.

Bah...if you want a listing of really bizarre personal ascetic quirks just go through any orthodox calendar of saints...specially a Russian one! As for the absence of "modern" saints within a Protestant milieu--placing aside the inherited biggies--well, both Calvin and Luther are prime candidates for psychiatric evaluation! Wink
