Has anyone else looked into this phenomenon? What do you think of it?

No. What is it supposed to be? For me it has little or perhaps no meaning.

Two philosophy instructors at a cocktail party.
So James! Have read the new book by so and so?
Read it?  why I haven't even lectured on it yet.

My guess is that it is the adoption of minorities, putting them into the position of being the proletariat, so that one can wage the good fight against oppression, by promotion of "a cohort of allies, the rainbow coalition, multiculturalism, against "white" culture, of the dead white males.  Rigoberta Menchu and all that stuff.  Rigoberta Menchu is an indigenous Guatamalan women (lesbian??) who has lived most of her life in France or New York or wherever, but she is promoted as being authentic third world, tribal etc, by those who I suppose you could call "cultural Marxists."
