Thanks. If there's anything similar for the RN online I'd be glad to know, though I do have records of all RN ships in books.

First would be Colledge, J. J.; Warlow, Ben (2006) [1969]. Ships of the Royal Navy: The Complete Record of all Fighting Ships of the Royal Navy (Rev. ed.). London: Chatham. ISBN 978-1-86176-281-8. OCLC 67375475.

it's not on line and it's expensive but it's the master reference imo.

Then...

Thaks for the online sites. I'm only interested in ships pre-1945, and basically pre-Dreadnought.

Is not DANF but a coflation of information found on the web sites maintained by both the USN and the RN? How about this site: http://www.history.navy.mil/index.html ?

We "antiquarians" believe anything that begins at the close of the 19th century is just too new to merit "deep" analysis...how about this source:

Thanks for that too. Most of my naval information is pre-internet.

I purchased a full set of DANF and I read every page relevant to my searcH.
Took a bit of time but info gleaned. Highly recommended.
