Hi Guys,

I am currently writing a book on Ned Kelly and the Kelly gang. Ned Kelly and the gang is often referred to Billy the Kid or Robin Hood for those that do not know the story.

The gang was on the run for 2yrs, and then they had their famous showdown with police in Glenrowan, Victoria
This fight is said to have been an attempt for the gang to create a republic of north east Victoria. The plan didn't work and the gang was destroyed.
When Ned Kelly was captured some have said that he had a copy of the Declaration in his pocket.
The other references to it come from the 1960's where two gentlemen believe to have seen it in London. One at the Library of Records office, and the other one said it was in a gallery.

Great searches have never found the document, which is why I am appealing to you all now. It is thought the document could of been supplied for the purpose of a show or display and then returned to the owner afterwards.

I have been contacting all library's and records offices from around the world. So far no luck, so  I appealing to you all in hope someone has seen it.

The document is described as being typed, and written in 'legal jargon'. If anyone can help please contact me at glenrowansiege@optusnet.com.au

no matter how small or how big the information, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and good luck with your research!

I have never heard this, and don't really believe it since Kelly had no popular support at the time.
I'd say the first and only important place to check would be the National Library, but I suspect you've already checked there.

It all sounds like an attempt at historical revisionism to me.
I've never heard Ned Kelly referred to as Billy the Kid or Robin Hood.
1.Ned Kelly was a criminal, an Armed Robber turned murderer;
2.Alive, he only had support from close family and friends, the rest of the community regarded his as what he was;
3.There was no political agenda that I've ever heard of;
4.If there had been, it was doomed to failure before it had been hatched-he had no political base or support.
I often wonder why I try.

From the Independent Australian:
"Ian Jones conducted a further interview with Thomas Patrick Lloyd in July 1969 and was told that a handwritten copy of the Declaration of the Republic of North-Eastern Victoria was still hidden away together with exercise books which contained records of meetings where such a Republic was discussed."

"In the same year [1855] James Mcpherson Grant, a Melbourne solicitor and parliamentarian, repeatedly pressed the notion of a Republic through the medium of the Age newspaper. He wrote that he envisaged Victoria as “a great free and independent Republic – the hope and salvation of the world”. In 1861 following a public meeting in Portland attended by some four to five hundred people, a separation league was formed. "

From The Age:
""The republic document has been seen," Shore says. "We've got three sightings of it — 1961, '65 and '67 — and three people have described the exact same document. It has to be out there somewhere." "

From the Northwest Star:
"In the book, Ned Kelly emerges in a surprising new light as a reformer, and member of the secret Irish agrarian organisation, the White boys. Ms Navarre’s evidence indicates the Glenrowan siege was an act of guerrilla warfare to declare the Republic of North East Victoria."

From Kelly Legend blog:
"In fact, as I shall show, this idea that the gang had a plan to declare the North East a Republic is a modern invention rather than a scheme that was ever in the minds of the Kelly Gang."
