Fergusonas an infotainer needs no defense, after all he's being paid for his antics and one need not pay them any attention. You on the other hand have no other rationale for your feathery fluthering in full ad hominem mode. Why not provide an example of how a European diplomatic congress of the 19th century drew up the map of the Americas in a matter of weeks?

PS: A 15th century pontiff does not count! As for the himno nacional...the poor doc having ulterior motives? Gadzooks, say it's not so champ!

Because it was not in the 19th century. It was in the 15th when the Pope divided the world between Portugal and Spain the first time. And during a century that was the law in the Americas, long time before British and French pirats, and then colones, changed the map one more time.

How come you don't remember, doc?

Interesting, now the guy has linked the British Empire with Eugenics....

If so, the British Empire was just the origins of the ideology that sustained Nazi Germany Confused

And the genocide of the Boers was shown. This guy have some decency, after all.

As I said once, this was the example copied later by the tyranies of the 20th century, Nazis included.

Here it comes, the Benny Hill style comedy, once again:

"In the twentieth century the British Empire will justify its existence by comming to the rescue of civilization" Confused

Niall Ferguson.

Something very interesting:

"Adoft Hitler repeatedly express his admiration for the British Empire"

Niall Ferguson.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guqClvVvAWs&feature=related

"The british empire against two of the more evil empires of history: the German and the Japanese"

Confused

Interesting, In the last chapter Niall is describing how British passed from being the head of the British Empire to an economical colony of the United States.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP0N3yMdLUI&feature=related

And how the British empire falls appart for the most part.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP0N3yMdLUI&feature=related

And its legacy: "English language and free market economy" Yes, we can agree on that Wink

Some comments:

1.  Early slavery in the Americas as practised by the British was much closer to the Nazi death camps than some plantation idyll.  The slaves were literally worked to death as that was the cheapest way to exploit the labour.

2.  It is clear to me that Caribbean slavery was a major source of capital accumulation - it's very much reflected in teh literature of the times.

3.  It can be argued I think that countries that avoided the benefits of imperial conquest by European powers e.g. Japan and Thailand were not noticeably retarded as a result when compared with neighbouring countries and Japan famously soon became a great power itself.

4.  The Scots - Ferguson is a Scot - were in in the van of imperialism and the slavery business.

5.  It cannot be argued that we are using the values of today to criticise the past. The Jacobins, Quakers and poets like Wordsworth realised the evils of slavery and imperialism and argued for freedom for oppressed peoples.

What is past is not necessarily settled.
