I thnk that the Bible, spoke non too highly about "multi-cultural" cities, thus "Babel!"  It was of course destroyed from within, when no one could "understand" another!

But, "When in France, do as the French (do/du)!", or words similar to those.

The present form is falling, but present forms are always falling. Our national constructs and our ideas of identity are no exception. Change is the only constant, to use a tired expression. To expect anything else is to set oneself up for disappointment and bitterness. The important thing for all existence is to adapt to changing circumstances in whatever way makes life the easiest.
Sing, goddess, of Achilles' ruinous anger
Which brought ten thousand pains to the Achaeans,
And cast the souls of many stalwart heroes
To Hades, and their bodies to the dogs
And birds of prey

Indeed! Clap
As usual, the Bible has the answer to most our questions. Unbelievable repository of knowledge it is this amazing book.

And let us not forget all those Chileans in Sweden. Rather noisy people some of them.

Why should we take the Peruvians? We can give you back the Chileans for free.

How quaint..."multi-culturalism" even as an abstraction is doomed in the Age of MTV and youtube...and all of this rot about Paris, shades of unrepentant afrancesados emulating the gilded youth of the 1920s in search of the "exotic"--better find yourself an old VW bus and take the ferry to Tangier! That's what we did in the late 50s...both Joyce and Hemingway are so passe, no matter how much the BBC wants to idealize the urban planning of the Second Empire.Big smile

Did you not say that Chile today is such a good and affluent country? Then you can indeed support some peruvians and other foreigners and also some repatriated chileans.

Well, Chile is not alone in the world taking refugees and poor from other coutries. Sweden accepted a lot of Chileans and many of them are perhaps rather grateful that we did.

Yes, you can keep them. We are still trying to improve the conditions of the 15% of our population that is poor. I don't think we should increase that figure accepting refugees.

I would guess that the definition of "poor" in your nation is much different that the definition here in the USA, where most of those designated as "poor" have at least a 42 inch flat screen TV, stereo, Cable TV, at least one automobile, etc.?
Some even have jobs!

The 15% poors we are talking about here are people living in shanty towns in what internationally is considered poverty. Most our people has already surpassed that stage and cars, 42 inch flat screen TV, cable TV, satellite tv, cars is not something extraordinary here, anymore. Having those won't make make you a "rich" here anymore, at all.

Our country is in the edge to become developed. In fact, most of the international assistance we used to receive is not comming anymore, and the U.N. is asking to us to contribute more.

Well, I have some experience with two women from Chile!  One of them came to the USA on a student visa, liked what she experienced, and decided to become an American by over-stayin her visa by over 5 years, and then giving birth to a beautiful grand-daughter to my wife's son, or my step son, who is a successful attorney in Memphis.  The custody battle is still on-going, but no one from the INS seems interested in deporting her.  There was no marriage, it was a "one-night stand" and it seems she was mostly interested in becoming a mother to become an American citizen.  My step son now has custody, after the mother abandoned her child and tried to commit suicide.

Just another sad story that has impacted my immediate family (in-law)!

Regards,

Ron
