Importance dates to remember


1540: the Spanish explorer Fernando De Soto leads an expedition into what is now the Alabama region

1702: the French establish fort Louis, the first permanent settlement in Alabama

1763: French gives the Alabama region to Great Britain

1783: Great Britain gives the United States much of present-day Alabama. It gives there a mobile region of Spain

1813: the United States captures mobile bay from Spain

1819: on December 14 Alabama becomes the 22nd state

1846: the state Alabama capital moved in Montgomery

1861: Alabama joins the Confederacy early in the civil war

1955: Rosa parks an African Americans, refuse to give up her seat to a white bus passenger, sparking the civil right movement

1965: Martin Luther king j leads a march from Selma to Montgomery to protest racial discrimination


1741: captain Vitus Bering of demarking sailing for Russia, leads on Alaskan islands.

1784: Russian settlers establish a fur trading station, the first white settlement in Alaska on Kodiak Island.

1867: the united state buys Alaska from Russia $7.2million dollars

1896: gold is discovered in Yukon, north-west Canada, setting off the Klondike and Alaska gold rushes
