Since the world cup is over and the new season is almost ready to kick off, I though starting a discussion headquarter for La Liga fans would be a good idea (thanks to Zagros with his Premier League thread).

This season would be very interesting to follow specially to watch if Barca could defend their title for a 2nd consecutive time and make it three back to back titles while the arch rivals Real Madrid's  hubris of its large amount of money at its disposal continues with spending like hell and recruiting new
players and the Champion's League winner couch Mourinho.
This years El Clasico will be one epic battle not only between the teams but also between Guardiola and Mourinho to show who is better when they come head on head (right now they are at 1 all with Barca defeating Chelsea at semis and then Mourinho revenging it with the help of Inter).

Other teams do look good but once again I think Barca and Real Madrid are still out of their reach by at least some 12-15 points.

Getting an early start I see! I like it!

As my avatar might suggest, I'm pulling for my Barcelona again. Unfortunately, I think that this Liga will be even more of a Real Madrid vs. Barcelona year than last year. Valencia sold their top talent, and will likely do very poorly. Sevilla doesn't have all the pieces to truly contend, which leaves Atletico de Madrid rounding out my top four.

The question will come down to how the Real Madrid pieces can gel. They've got a lot of top notch talent, but not much cohesiveness, and no clear leader. I also think that Mourinho will not be as popular at the Bernabeu as people expect. Mourinho's teams are strong defensive units, that can sit back and absorb the attacks off other teams - something that the Bernabeu faithful aren't too fond of. Additionally, it will be interesting to see how Crisitiano Ronaldo can adjust to both fatherhood, as well as Mourinho's coaching style.

I want to see if Barcelona can find a happy attacking balance with Villa, Messi and Ibra. I'm a tad irritated that we spent $45 million on Villa this season rather than last season. He was always a better fit for us than Ibrahimovic. Ibra is supremely talented, but he's a back to the goal, lightening rod for defenders, which isn't Barca's playing style. Barcelona is most effective when they can pass all around the penalty box, and make short cuts in. Ibra is too stationary, and he pulls defenders into the area where other players could make a move. We played better in the last ten games with Bojan as our starting central striker than Ibra. Had Bojan started our elimination game against Internazionale we probably would have won. As soon as he entered the game, our attacking opportunities opened up, something a stationary central striker couldn't accomplish.

While I think that Fabregas will eventually come home, I think that Joan Laporta screwed up his opportunities to come this season by making the affair way too public, and constantly talking to the press. He soured any relationship we may have had with Arsenal, and left Sandro Rosell in an Obama type situation where he has to repair Barcelona's reputation (and economic situation). Our larger concern is replacing Toure Yaya, although signing Fabregas would solidify our offense for the next five years.

I'll post my official predictions for the season after the transfer season has ended.

The poll should only have two teams, let's be honest.  The La Liga television licensing structure gives these two teams a very unfair advantage.  In England TV revenues are split equally amongst all 20 clubs.

As far as those two teams go, despite their huge financial income advantage over Liga rivals, Barcelona are still somehow debt riddled and had to take out a £150m bank loan for, amongst other things, securing last months player salaries which were left unpaid.  They simply cannot afford Fabregas.  If Chelsea want £30m for Ashley Cole then Fabregas is worth at least twice as much, at least.

As for Real, I think they're back.  IMHO Mourinho's impact will be immediate and it will be evident with success in the Liga this year and also in the Champion's League where I expect them to reach the final.

I do agree with your phrase of "two team poll" dear Zagros, it has been a long time since any other club in La Liga shined to the top spot and made an impact.
Most of the people would agree with me saying that who ever wins El Clasico ends up winning the League since other than one on one, Real and Barca carries such a perfect record that it's hard to find out who will win without getting both of them face each other.

Kaysaar I too think bringing in Ibra was a very bad decision that not only went wrong but also cost us a chance to get to finals of champions league (since Inter bought Milito with the money that was granted by Barca to them for Ibra for whom we also lost Eto'e).

Anyways that's something done and can't be redone so we have to move on. When they brought in Villa I though once again they are making the same mistake with spending money on position that we already have lots of, it would had been a much wiser decision to either exchange Ibra for Villa or sell Ibra and with that money buy Villa.
Now we would be having the best of young talent (Pedro, Bojan and Jeffren) warming up the benches while Ibra, Villa and Messi would be starting where as all three of the youngsters do have every right to start specially Pedro and Bojan.

For mid we seriously require Fabi's service but now it looks like we will have to wait another season for him, thanks to Laporta.
Bosquet, Xaviesta and Keita will start but the problem will pop when one of them get injured and we won't be able to fill in their shoes.

Now we know the first round of La Liga!

LEVANTE-SEVILLA

HERCULES-ATHLETIC

AT.MADRID-SPORTING

RACING-BARÇA

MALLORCA-REAL MADRID

MALAGA-VALENCIA

ESPANYOL-GETAFE

REAL SOCIEDAD-VILLARREAL

DEPORTIVO-ZARAGOZA

OSASUNA-ALMERIA

Zagros - Unfortunately, nearly all of the world's largest football clubs are riddled with debt - Real Madrid owes close to 600 million Euros, Manchester United and Liverpool are also in debt, and Valencia is in financial destitution.

The debt Man U and Liverpool are in came with their owners, they didn't accumulate it from day to day business and I am not aware of clubs taking out loans to pay player salaries unless they are on the brink like Portsmouth did numerous times last year.  The Glaziers use Man U revenues to pay off their cosmic debts.

Fairly predictable results across La Liga - with the exception of the Real Madrid v. Real Mallorca game.

I only watched the Barcelona game, with the exception of the last ten minutes of the Madrid Game. I was generally pleased with the play of Barcelona, although they could use a few games to find their flow again, because it looked like were putting a lot of extra power behind their passes that will be tightened up as the season goes on. Two of the three goals were solid Barcelona goals, and Iniesta's shot was a perfect example of taking advantage of a keeper's mistake.

Another predictable(boring) season of La Liga... Barca has 65% chance of winning, and Real about 34.5%, and Valencia/Sevilla about a combined 0.35 % ... Not impressed.

Very true for both Liverpool and ManU in terms of debt, and why they came to have it.

The other thing that I noticed and would like to be improved was the gap of communication between Villa and rest Barca players, though as you mentioned with games that will too develop but right now 8/10 attempts to get Villa in a striking range ended up him being offside.
I really don't remember the last time I saw this much of Offsides by Barca, not at least since last 2 season.

Kaysaar, what's your take on Ibra? Do you agree with the decision  or ...?
I personally think that though he should had been given a more proper chance but since he was having trouble with the couch then he deserved to be transfered both for his and team's better.

My take on Ibra eh?

I think that it's best for both Ibrahimovic and Barcelona for him to move on. Ibra is a supremely talented player, and a player that consistently wins league championships, but I don't think that he fit the Barcelona playing model as well as a player like David Villa does. Barcelona thrives in a fast paced, dynamic, quick pass offense. If you look at two seasons ago when they won everything, they positioned most of their attackers around the box and made quick passes and darting runs into the box. By doing this, they can spread the defense in the penalty area, and it gives them room to operate.

When Ibrahimovic joined Barcelona, he never really adapted to the Barcelona playing model. He is a more stationary, back to the goal striker. He spent too much time largely static in the penalty area, and since he's a big target, he brought defenders with him, which closed off many of Barcelona's traditional attacks. Even last year you could see the difference when the team played with and then without him. For the last few games, Bojan played in his place and Barcelona became a wrecking ball again. Like I said, extremely talented, but he's couldn't adapt to the model in Barcelona.
