Attached is a quote from Tomas Sowell's Basic economics. The quote itself is borrowed from "India Unbound " by Gurcharan Das I wonder if anybody can name those "liberal democracies" in 1790 and in 1848 ![]() ![]() |

This :I wonder if anybody can name those "liberal democracies" in 1790 and in 1848
![]() Forgetting we are always at school, make it easy for me wee brain. are you thinking how can such upheaval and destruction in the various revolutions have occurred under liberal democracies? it's like calling the riots in US 'peaceful demonstrations'

By mother's line, one of my great grand fathers was Cossack (his son, my grand father was a military officer in Soviet army), and before my great grand father his father, his grand father etc. were Ural Cossacks too. Sorta a family type of business back at the time of Imperial Russia. They were based on the river Ural (or Yaik) far away from Moscow and mixed a lot with Central Asian people, that's why even my mom had some Turkic features in her appearance. In Moscow there is an enbankment which used to be called after Ural Cossacks a 1.5 century ago, it's on the opposite side of Moscow river just next to Kremlin.

I am kinda curious about the consequences of the above performance involving the Cossacks.
You see, sometimes people are dressed like Cossacks, but may have no relation to real Cossacks. But even if those folks from the video are real Cossacks, clearly they are breaking a few articles of the Criminal Code of Russia and can get sentenced to prison. Unlike the performers they have no masks and are easy to identify

The performers have rather tarnished reputation themselves too and seem a bit inadequate in how they assess their personal security once they stood on the path of publicity. Any publicity is always unsafe. Who knows what may happen to them when nobody films. Sometimes people get extracted from the water with their feet in concrete shoes and the police reports it was an accident..

"We are very frustrated but we will not give up and will do everything to shoot the video, but we do not know where, at this point," Tolokonnikova said.
"There is a list of people marked by the state as extremists and we are included in that list. Therefore, whatever we do, even if we organize an event just to plant flowers, it will be interrupted by the anti-extremist unit." Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were close to completing their two-year prison sentences when they were freed in December 2013 under an amnesty they dismissed as a propaganda stunt to improve Putin's image ahead of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. |

Well, surely those Pussy riot performers won't be famous for their cultural or musical heritage. Their message is clearly political, and we all know what happens to people who stood on the path of political publicity and opposition, no matter what country they belong to. Martin Luther King, Angela Davis or British weapon expert David Kelly

this is the comment of a political Conservative righty ![]() my thoughts are similar, i don't have sympathy bc they were managing some notoriety on the fact that, you know- Russia Russia Russia! entertainment and politics don't have good results. In US there is a great oh shall we say REAPING of hollywood paedos connected to Epstein and other massive arrests recently, internationally. US democrats have been pushed so far left as to allow for and advocate for the destruction of Civil War and other national memorials. Now most states are under control, the trouble was always the worst in 'blue' or democrat states like Minnesota and New York. Republicans states are 'red' like Texas and Montana where citizens protected the Alamo and Mt Rushmore was protected by the Republican governor and the National Guard. |

Yeah, this morning while reading this forum I was also listening to Spanish podcast and learnt the news of desecrated monuments of Columbus, a monk and other folks in the US ![]() 60% of the casualties that Soviet army suffered from operations abroad during the WWII took place in Poland, and now Polish folks seem to rethink their history (they lost a quarter of their Slavic & Jewish population under Nazi's regime)

They seem still to allow non-muslims to attend the temple. I once was inside a mosque in Kazan (Russia). They have both a church and a mosque built next to each other on the same square. It's almost like in Jerusalem.

not everything is left--right.
Was Churchillian England more or less conservative than Nazi Germany? Was Roosevelt America more or less liberal/radical than Stalinist Russia? It is not a temple, it is (rightfully) a church or a mosque or a museum, depending on who you ask. Mosques play a very important part in Islamic states' politics, because you can make other meetings illegal, but you can't get rid of religious meetings, which is one reason why the radicals are found in the religion. Ataturk was a secular leader, so what Erdogan is doing is going back on part of Turkey's secularist tradition (which is also part of the tradition that killed off Armenians and Kurds and Greeks, although I don't know that much about that).
