An ancient Lawgiver and reformer of Spartan society who was often referred to by ancient historians. His reforms were centered around three Spartan virtues: Equality amongst it's citizens only, austerity and military fitness. His most noted effort at passing a law is the Great Rhetra.

The ancients believed such a man had existed in the 7th century B.C. but now a days most historians are not that certain if he was so much a historical figure as much as a mythical one. Did he exist or was he a creation to help the ancient Spartans form an identity during a chaotic period that saw the birth of what we now call Classical Sparta?

I don't have any issue with him having existed. I actually wonder why every individual of import in the Ancient World, is supposedly a myth. Frustrating.

There are two major questions, 1) whether a Lykurgos existed and 2) whether the laws were given by him or at all given by only one person. While 1) is difficult to answer, 2) is supposely not made by a single person. And that means, that if a Lykurgos existed, he was probably different to the myth.
