Merry Christmas

recently I read that some people don't like the phrase "Happy Holidays" because to them it is taking Christ out of Christmas.  I have always used them interchangeably.  On the other hand, in Bavaria I used "Servus" and "Gruss Gott" interchangeably, the first being the Protestant greeting, and the later being the Catholic greeting.  So I guess I have always confused them.  But personally I don't think that I have it confused.  It is anybody else who has a friendly greeting confused with a theological statement. ;)

So merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Happy Kwanzaa or whatever flavor of greeting you prefer.<grin>

Franciscoan- I concur. The seasons greetings are not confined to Christians, but a wish for the well being of all mankind. I'm thinking particularly of the starving children of Africa and the refugee children of Syria.

How did we ever let thing get this bad?

I like my culture, without it the concept of human rights may never have been invented.

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Joyeux Noel! Noel is the French word for Christmas. There is a Christmas song (hymn) The First Noel. Sometimes it is written with a different spelling: The First Nowell.

- and the Nordic / Scandinavian way... the Vikings drank Yule - drinking party in more days.

Merry Yule everyone and happy Solstice!

May this Solstice and turning of the wheel bring you love, peace and good fortune in the coming year. Let us welcome the returning sun with hope and joy. May you never thirst.

In Denver, up at Red Rocks natural ampitheatre, the hippies and assorted denizens drum up the sun for the Winter Solstice.  If they didn't drum it up, it might not come up!

What do you call someone who hangs out with musicians?  A drummer;)

I hope those in northern climes are keeping warm.

Christmas Day will be 40 degrees C in my neck of the woods. Merry Christmas to all, and may 2017 be an even happier New Year than this one Party

Hi Harburs! Good to hear from you, and I hope you enjoy this holiday period.
Yes, the old AE was much more alive. I miss it. Part of the decline is due to social media. The other part of it is due to overzealous moderation on the WH forum. Oh well.

Good to see you back here Smile

Thank you, mate! the split and renaming the site was the major blow in my opinion but social media brought us down.  I still remember the flame wars and constant pop up ids! Good old days, we had so many active members and fascinating threads that I couldn't read them all on daily basis.

Merry Christmas, to all!
At this history forum I ask about the first documented Christmas (and/or Jul or saturnalia)greetings. Where, when etcetera.

"...over zealous moderation on the WH Forum."

Are you referring to this WH?

Over zealous? You've got to be kidding. If you want to see over zealous, try the AE site or the Historum site, where it seems that each of the mods is trying to score more bans and suspensions than the others.

As for "alive", this forum is what the users make it -if more of the older members contributed on a regular basis, it would generate a lot more traffic.

In my opinion, this is the best of the history forums on the net.  If anyone doesn't like it, go ahead, quit!

Having been a member of this forum much longer than you, including during its prime, I'm in a position to know what I am talking about. Excessive willingness to sanction members for spirited behaviour played a role in turning people off.

I see no good reason to follow your advice.

History or whatever, it was great time. I personally enjoyed it very much. We had many good members and a lot of constructive threads, we had the history competition/quiz, we had monthly magazine, mead hall was a cool place to hang out, current offers was always active with knowledgeable people debating over politics and social life matters. We had game section, and historical threads were awesome to read.  We had linguists, archaeologists, university professors, engineers, students, ... and the hard headed nationalists starting flame wars. We all grew older and have less time to spend here.

All the forums I visit have had a reduction in participation starting about 3 years ago.  I would guess a lot of people were sucked away by "fake" news sites.  I like Gad Saad, the Rubin Report, Sam Harris, Styxhexenhammer, thunderfOOt, Mark Dice, H.A. Goodman and others.
