There is a thread on the forum dedicated to US Migration, and, despite the best efforts of the Department of Customs and Border Patrol, the number of people unlawfully entering the USA from Mexico seems to be increasing.

But it's not only the US which is having problems with unlawful migration. Many Mediterranean countries face the same problem with immigrants from North Africa, Syria, Palestine etc.

And then of course, there's the "lawful" migration, where people from EU countries can move about freely. This has resulted in an upsurge of Eastern European migrants moving to the financially better off countries of western Europe, notably, the UK.

In Australia, people are arriving by boat from Indonesia, which seems singularly unwilling to take the steps necessary to prevent it. The people are from South East Asia, the Middle East and from as far away as Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The current level of people movement cannot be sustained by "host countries" and an answer must be found. How about helping the poor countries develop industries and employment to keep the impoverished within their own borders, before it is too late.
It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.

These stats won't take into account illegal migrations, or in the case of Australia, the number of immigrants who have been housed off shore and awaiting a decision as to their future.

And I don't know whether or not I'd trust figures coming from the CIA.

No, I've not mentioned Somali people.

I suspect that if there are large numbers of Somalians on the move, they'd be more likely to be heading for North Africa and perhaps the Mediterranean.

Forget the Somalis for a moment.

Many of the people arriving in Australia via Indonesia and people smugglers have come from places like Pakistan and Afghanistan. They could not have crossed so many international borders without documentation, either forged or genuine.

When they arrive in Australian waters, they have no documentation at all. This is what delays their processing.

I read in todays paper that 4000 "boat people" arrived in Italy within the past twenty four hours.

The Italian government says the level of arrivals in this fashion is unsustainable.

I really have become a little xenophobic lately. Listening to all those foreign Latinos in my country, which nobody invited, carrying theirs disgusting tropical accents, salsa style and decadent subculture makes me sick. Get out of my country!! Go to Cuba!!
Now I understand why Americans build such a fortress of a border.

How far back is "modern"? If we look back a few generations a majority of ancestors of todays populations of much of the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and a few other places came either from continental Europe or from European isles like Britain and Ireland.

Fantasus: In the context of this thread, I intended that "modern" be in the past decade or so.

Yes, of course all of the New World countries were populated by Europeans or Africans or Asians, but I'm talking about is the late 20th Century. Hundreds of thousands of people have either moved from their home country or are on the move. The problem is that the level of resettlement cannot be sustained by host countries.

The main problem is how "useful" are the new immigrants. In the past immigrants where people that came from developed lands that carried skills helpful to new territories. They developed industries and technologies that host countries lacked. So host countries welcomed immigration and encouraged it.

Today, we have massive migrations of beggars, that sometimes don't know how to read or write and some don't even know how to use a washroom, and that only increase the welfare lists. This new situation is really unsustainable in the long term.
