I had joined this forum yesterday i.e; on 28-08-2012.
And the very next day, I had the opportunity to visit one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Indus Valley civilization. The city is dated at around 2500 BCE.
Among many other things, it is best known as the site of the first "dock". The earliest known to humankind. .It was a vital and thriving trade centre in ancient times, with its trade of beads, gems and valuable ornaments reaching the far corners of West Asia and Africa. The techniques and tools they pioneered for bead-making and in metallurgy have stood the test of time for over 4000 years.

Here are a couple of pictures I clicked at the site today. It is almost saddening to see the neglect in preserving such places of great historical significance.

The first "dock" known to humankind.

This is the first "dock" built by humankind. The site was used for extensive trade with the Sumer, The Egyptians and many other African ports.

Mechanism for controlling the flow of water.

Sweage system.

An ancient well.

Thanks for showing this,  I have wondered about the Indus Valley to a degree... the first dock ever constructed in the world. well I would think that is a little bold for 2,500 B.C..E even but I will look at the album
