The ancient name of Lucknow (which is an Anglicism) was Lakhanpuri, derived from the mythical founder Lakshmana. By the time of the Delhi Sultanate the city was known as Lackhnau, but even then it was the heart of today's Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand Faizabad (Fyzabad) has no "history" prior to the 18th century except for the mythical and one can more or less accept the compilation in the Tarikh-i- Farahbaksh of Mohamad Faiz Baksh where Sadat Khan is credited with the establishment of a fortress on the Ghagra in 1722. Now some claim that Fayzabad is named for this courtier of the Nawab Daula, who essentially chose the site for a new urbanization however in all probability the contemporary name is a corruption of Faiz Baksh (Beautiful Garden).

Are you sure you are not employing me as a shortcut to some classroom assignment? I have already given you the "source" for the origins of Faizabad since as an urbanization it has no history prior to the Nawab Daula. On the other hand for Lucknow we can not presuppose an archaeological past homogenous to that of the Indian dynastic kingdoms prior to the 13th century; however, as a prominent urbanization it too belongs to the age of the Nawabs. The original settlement Lakshman Tila was essentially a fortress associated with Bijnor but by the time of Akbar, the town was known as "the City of Oudh" and it was under this name that it received the subsequent patronage of the Nawabs--Nawab Daula to be exact who transferred his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow in 1775. One need not be confused over a principal town having the same name as the territorial division despite an existing identity. You can follow it all in the Tarikh cited.

Its just some research that I have to do for a class and it is not a assignment yet. And it is pretty hard to find information about Faizabad and Lucknow prior to Mughal rule. I have found some stuff about Lakhanpuri but its sort of mixed in mythology and real history.  The last rulers of North India before the Delhi Sultanate were the Senas.  But, I haven't figured out yet if they reached all the way to Lucknow since the furthest they supposedly went was Varanasi.  I think its safe to assume that the Senas ruled all the way to Lucknow and Faizabad?

The reason you can not find anything on either Lucknow or Faizabad prior to the Delhi sultanate is because there was no urbanization there worthy of note and attempts to associate the region under the sphere of the Bengali Sena is tenuous at best. Keep in mind that we are discussing a region more proximate to Nepal than Delhi and, given the tendency of nationalist Indian historians to treat religious mythology within the ambit of the historical attempts to find Hindi underpinnings, it is much too risky to play that game. For example you have put forth that the Sena ruled North India since their political clout only reached as far as Bihar the notion they even occupied Uttar Pradesh is improbable. Further as is typical even today, the traditional was village life and not city in the time of the Sena so viewing either of these cities as rooted to anything else other than their development during the course of the 18th century is more than problematical it is fictional.

Hmm well a good amount of Bengali/Bihar empires did rule Uttar Pradesh like the Harshas, Palas, and Mauryas, but I see your point.  I did look into the Nepalese Empires at that time which is the Thakuri Dynasty, and I don't think they had any land in Uttar Pradesh.
