It's the grand Hawas Publicity Bark sailing up the Nile and in actuality this reporting is preliminary adveritising for the Discovery Channel program on Tut set for broadcast this Sunday, the 21st. It is all over the Net.  However, do not go by that superficial article, which contains several boners.

The question over the relationships of the last pharaohs of the 18th dynasty is in all actuality a very old one. In short, let us call them the last Thutmosids. The vast artistic trove of the decadent Thutmosids reveals a rather intricate play between major and minor lineages:

Amenhotep II interestingly enough became the third of a series of pharaohs that were pharaonic off-springs with minor wives. Likewise Amenhotep III was the progeny of Thutmose IV and another minor wife and to complicate matters further all of these pharaohs had numerous daughters enshrined in templar iconography, none of which (with the exception of Ankhensenpaaten/Ankhensenamon) are actually clearly identified as the daughters of a pharaoh married to a ruling pharaoh. The historical record does clearly show a high mortality rate with first sons among all the successors of Thutmose I, who is the last pharaoh of the 18th dynasty recorded with a clear pedigree in familial succession.

One thing is certain, however, the interlude of the "female" pharaoh, Hatshepsut, the last pharaonic female to marry the progeny of a minor wife (Thutmose II) might have provoked a break with "tradition" among the successors of Thutmose III, given the political consequences of those years.  Interestingly, the cache of unidentified mummies (shades of Smenkhare) subjected to genetic analysis might only complicate matters even further. We will not go into the jack-in-the box that are the "priestly" connections.
