Using the Forum
Here's a few pointers to help you become acquainted with this forum. We have five main forum sections or Categories:
Within each forum exist various sub-forums. If you want to post a new subject - starting a new thread - you can either post it in the main forum, or find a subforum you think would be best.
Every sub-forum has a description that will guide you.
A special Category is called Restricted Area. Here you will be able to post only after you have acquired a sufficient title (based on the number of posts you have made).

What we ask of You...
There are no requirements what so ever for you to be part of this great community or to participate in the multitude of different discussions throughout the whole forum.
Whether you are a professor, scholar or student of history, an amateur historian - or a teen who just wants to learn about history, you are most welcome to participate.
On the other hand, you do not need to tell everyone how great your nation is, we already know - or that your ethnic lineage is so much greater or better than the lineage of the next guy - we know that too.
We only ask you to be civil and polite when you discuss - thats all.
Here we attack arguments when we discuss - not the person behind the arguments.
The Moderators will enforce the Code of Conduct, so you might as well read it now to know the drills.
You can find it HERE and in the announcement in all sections on the forum.

Hello
My name is Jamie. I'm interested in ancient history in general, and in the transition to the neolithic and its effect on the distribution of languages, a very touchy subject and a minefield of polemics. I liked the rules here so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Hi, I'm Steve Mann, aka."quarklet". I'm interested in philosophy and have developed my own as I've gained snow upon my summit. Hopefully, some of it will melt here before I fall over...

Hi all, here is so much to read. Lately I'm hooked on WW1 but I'm hard pressed to think of any historical period that fails to fascinate. Very pleased with all the wonderful writing and debate. As a commoner I'll admit to holes in my education (enough to fill the Albert Hall). And yet there's a chance I may surprise you.

Well, my primary interest is in Ecclesiastical History, with secondary interests in Classical and Late-Antique European history. In the latter two fields, the steppes are always relevant, as the sedentary civilizations surrounding the Eastern Mediterranean always had to be wary of invaders from the North and East. I did a bit of study in Central Asian History during my years as a grad student, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I am far from an expert. As far as the Mongols went, I loved studying the rise of the Empire. What so many amateur historians forget is how civilized they were. We have, in the popular consciousness, this image of unwashed and uncivilized hordes coming off the steppes and spreading barbarism. What we miss, in this, is that while they might have been unwashed, they were far from uncivilized. What we see from the fleeting portraits we have of Genghis, and from the more full portraits we have of his successors, is a people united by leaders, and leaders united by a sense of purpose and mission. And we also see radical innovation in statecraft, in the first century of the Mongol Empire, the likes of which the world had not beheld for centuries, even in ancient, cultured Byzantium. If you are planning on starting topics on Central Asian history in this forum, I say welcome, welcome, and welcome again! ![]() ![]() -Akolouthos Edited by Akolouthos - 05 Feb 2016 at 14:12 |

I have learned to say, "I am from the Light", yet I was born in the State of Texas USA, which suggests I should be proud and sassy. I am humble, a bit mild manured and still curious at 88 years of age,. I hope to make a friend here and there as I make my way thru the dusty files of our thoughtful past. I do expect someday you all will be proud and happy Fredy came along.
Cheers with sincerity, Fred Edwards |
