I will have a look at McWhorter. It's fascinating not just in the historical sense. I have known several autistic people who are considered to be "without language" however every toy, movie, familiar visual, request or outrage has a consistent, distinct accompanying grunt, gesture or indication of rejection. 
These communications are only for meaningful situations. 

Accordingly, if there is no need to take notice of the cat, the cat is ignored. The significance being that these same people have impulses in other areas that MUST be acted upon or it is very upsetting, catastrophic even depending on the person.
