Would you, or do you now pay to read news media on the net? Major publications used to be free, but many papers are now being squeezed- print editions are not viable, and they need revenue. The model of paying a subscription after a few teaser articles is now becoming the model for some major publications.

Are they worth it? Could they get the money through advertising? Given the size of the net, are they being unrealistic in asking for money for their one particular outlet? Or is this the future? What do you think?

In my opinion, newspapers that are online should be for free. The news shouldn't be copyrighted since everyone should know, and no one is stupid enough to print an entire newspaper without that special paper. And why buy it online when you can buy a newspaper  almost everywhere and actually own it instead of just getting to look at it on a screen. If you want to see the news on a screen just watch TV News stations, it's free.

Why would I pay for whitewashed mainstream news which seems to have no variety in either content or opinion (note: not journalism) from one outlet to the other?
"There was glory in pissing, Corabb decided as he watched the stream curve out and make that familiar but unique sound as it hit the ground." So true.

In a world of decreasing government revenues, we are headed for the only 'free' online newspapers being controlled by corporations who produce the content at a loss but with the benefit of manipulating public opinion to their owners' advantage

The alternatives are government funded media a la the BBC or small subscription paying niche markets for the well educated professionals who hate having the dumbed down media products present in both government provided and corporately donated streams.
