Egyptian authorities have convicted a number of foreign journalists for supposedly undermining the current regime. For non-friendly articles about the Egyptian government, some writers have been condemned to up to 10 years in jail, including Canadians, Dutch, and Australians.

This is draconian and extremist, but, never the less, the US has decided to release a huge amount of aid to said government, free speech and liberty be damned. Why? We don't know, but we do know that the original reason for US aid to Egypt was for them to lay off Israel, and don't do anything that might endanger that entity.

Are we dealing with cynicism here, or extreme cynicism?

Yes, Australian journalist Peter Greste was sentenced to 7years imprisonment for comments which were insulting to the Egyptian leadership.

I don't know what the comments were, but one would have imagined that international journalists would know better than to risk prosecution by producing anything inflammatory in a Muslim country.

As for the US, politics are politics. Aren't they?

It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.
