Seriously?  Inglorious Bastards being on the list sounds purely political. It was a campy WWII movie at best. Typical Tarantino blood and guts (which I tend to enjoy) but not Oscar caliber!

I liked The Blind Side over Up In The Air. Both were nice, and the nod goes to Bullock for best actress. I wouldn't count Jeff Bridges out either. Those are my picks. Avatar will win stuff for special effects and the first award given to blue aliens.

With the kind of films that have been winning the Oscars lately is there actually is an "oscar calibre" to begin with?

I have seen only the Hurth Locker and couldn't finish it (fell asleep) and Inglorious bastards which is good but I have seen better films of 2009.

In fact none of those films scream Oscar to me.  I think the best actress Oscar is going to Meryl Streep

Oscar calibre means that the movie is boring, too serious and not worth a hoot once it wins the title -  "Best Picture" (I suppose, according to that definition, 'Inglorious' shouldn't win after all). Dvd sales will pick up but you won't want to watch it again for some reason. And past winners?

Slumdog was good but the rest of the films you mentioned are not good. I still couldn't finish any of them.

As for the winner of best picture, Its got to be Avatar, Hollywood likes them big and they can be bigger than Avatar.

Oscars tend to go to the biggest pictures, not the best.

There may be some truth to this, but every once in a while a film worth watching again wins, such as The Departed.

Well overall I guess Parnell arranged putted it very well in a single line that mostly it's the biggest picture that gets the Oscar.
I would be really sad to see The Blind Side losing to Avatar (which I am 90% sure that will happen), since The Blind Side was a very strong movie with a great message along with good acting from Sandra.

The movies that I think really deserved Oscar throught out the Award's history are : The Godfather I and II, Gone with the Wind, Gladiator, Rocky, Gandhi, Breveheart, The Departed and last year's winner Slumdog Millionaire.
