Hi to all who frequent the China forum……

…I am looking for some help in tracking down some information on a certain Mr Wang Chen who was Chinese ‘Vice-Premier’ around 1978…the problem I have is that no matter how I look up the name, I get a variety of sources but I cannot find anything specific at all…most of the information I get does not correspond with the Wang Chen that I have on record as visiting British Prime Minister James Callaghan on the 16th November 1978….even the primary sources I have from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office during the late 1970’s do not give a clear picture… Confused..

…I have some material relating to a ‘Wang Xillian’ which states that he was re-elected to the politburo in 1973, gained leadership of the Beijing Military Region command in January 1974, more importantly Xillian was named Vice Premier in the mid-1970s, a title he retained until his downfall in 1980….

….perhaps this Xillian/Chen is the same person?...I do not know??…it might be possible that the names have been slightly confused given the time period they come from…can anybody clear up whether the two are the same, or does someone know where there is material relating to Wang Chen…? I would be very grateful for any guidance and help in this matter….

…thanks for your time…

…All the best….AoO…

It should be Wang Zhen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Zhen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Zhen

He was a Vice-premier in the same time period as Wang Xilian.

Wade-Giles for Pinyin "Zhen" is "Chen" so this must be the source of confusion.

...thank you very much Sarmat...i think you are correct...in the sources i am looking at the Wade Giles system is used a number of times for other names which are familiar to me, but lesser known (by me) Chinese polictical figures have proved troublesome.... so that might account for the confusion....

..thanks again....i will check out Wang Zhen again in the places where i have looked before...

..thank your very much for your reply, I appreciate your help and information….indeed, since I have been pointed in the right direction, I have managed to find out some more useful material relating to Zhen, which helps to construct an idea of the man when he was in diplomatic talks with the British Government during 1978…..everyone’s advice has been most helpful….thank you all…

Ahh I remember Wang Zhen. He gave my employers a few more luxuries back. He wasn't a very happy man though, very quiet around my employers.
