These videos show masses of people mobbing stores, pushing, shoving, and fighting over various consumer goods.

So what gives here? It seems nearly all of society has been hijacked for the purposes of consumerism. Christmas is no longer a religious notion, but a template for the most lavish orgy of materialism of the year. Thank you Christ. Wal Mart would probably send Him a dividend, or at least some redeemable coupons if they could.

What is going on in a society where toys and trinkets now have the focus of religious icons of years past? It sounds to me that society, and I am focusing on the US here, although these developments are not limited to that country, is becoming somewhat infantilized, with Batman and the Flintstones selling out at the movie box offices, while larger concerns are ignored, or seized upon recklessly after a twenty second sound bite on Fox News, or CNN, themselves no strangers to fluff and melodrama.

Even our urban environments channel us to consumerism. Public squares and cafe lined boulevards are disappearing, sacrificed to the supposed utility of concrete and faster auto travel. And with that extra time saved, we can now......go to the mall, and spend, on trinkets and gew-gaws from China.

Well, enough of my rant for today. I have some Christmas shopping to finish off.

They tried religion (some bad results), largely moved on to nationalism (some truly horrible results), and largely moved on the consumerism.
