In 1066, William of Normandy became King of England.    
Norman-French became the language of king, court and nobility.     
It was also the predominant language of business and secular culture.

It became the preferred language you mean. Bear in mind that some of William's nobles were still Anglo-Saxon after the invasion - they weren't all replaced.
