One thing I like in a conversation, is when someone mispronounces a word, particularly a technical term or foreign phrase. I like this not because they are wrong about the pronunciation, but because it shows that they probably learned it through reading it, rather than being told it by some "expert." It shows a bit of intellectual initiative on their part, and that is good. When it happens, I usually correct them on their pronunciation, but also tell them that I like it and it shows that they had some initiative in their own self-education. in getting something (rather superficial) wrong, they are getting something right, that they're engaged with the world, and learning on their own.

That's a bit rich, coming from an American, a race which usually mispronounces English words, misspells them and generally mangles the language. You, personally, have the cheek to tell someone else how to pronounce words in the language? Whenever you're doing this, use the Oxford Dictionary as a reference, not the Miriam Webster version, that way you may learn to speak the language properly. |

we speak American English, if that is what you mean, it is what the world wants to learn, but usually they have to be satisfied with British English, because Americans are parochial. How can you tell my accent? By the fact that I write color instead of colour?? The words I usually find people using without knowing the pronunciation are foreign words (Greek, Latin, German, Japanese,) or philosophical or intellectual jargon. and I am glad that they are expanding their boundaries even though they my not know the correct, officious pronunciation. But, I know that some people would look down on them for mispronouncing, and so I tell them it right so that others will pay attention to what they say, and not get caught up with how they say it. Of course, sometimes you can even have widely accepted differences, pa-ti-na, vs pat-tina. Trite or Tri-te (incorrect common pronunciations treats the e, as a silent e).
