Dear reader,
Doing research for my book to be published, I came across a photo which - I believe - represents a letter-writer, with his table outside in the street, surrounded by a crowd of young spectators, from the time when China was about to become a republic (men still wearing queues).

Please have a look and let me know what you think: do you agree this is a letter-writer?

Do you have more information or images about them?" rel="nofollow -

Kind regards,

Charles in Shanghai

From what I can see, I think you are correct. His pen or brush is in the ink pot in front of him, with a number of paper pages.

As you would no doubt be aware, it was common practice in bygone times for uneducated people to pay scribes to write letters or complete official papers for them.
