In recent months there have been some very bizarre posts which do not address the Original Post, but go off on serious tangents. They're irrelevant!

Why confuse the OP readers by doing this?

If a side issue is important why not create a new post, and address that issue?

Maybe a glance through the threads where YOU took us completely of topic is in order,
what do you think?

Doesn't make it right though, does it?

As for the posts you mention, go for it!

You have to start a thread to lodge your objections?
I'm sure all three of us are taking it very seriously.

If you think of a topic as as circumscribed by a circle, a tangent touches on that circle, and can, when things are stagnant, breath a little new life into the topic, because it gives a new "angle" to approach the topic.

Tangents are not as desirable, but it would best if we had more traffic, more back and forth.

When we are interested in a topic we can go at it for months. It's fun. We had a month long discussion in response to an ad fer chrissakes!
The periphery is explored since so much of history is connected to other histories and science, art etc..

One reason our threads go off topic is no participation by the original poster, it might be an interesting idea that leads to a mixed bag of references. Some are just silly, still I don't see any harm in it if the original poster is absent or is in on the joke.

How many new posts with two or three comments are necessary?
Topics overlap and sometimes thread overlap is totally appropriate. We can start new threads anytime, everyday, three times a day!
How many topics do you want to share when we generally catch up every 2,3 or 4 days?

Do you want 30 ongoing open topics? You are supposed to be enjoying yourself, do want someone to call OFF TOPIC! Angry
When you are just making a little joke?Clown

Have readers complained to you about being confused toyomotor?Wacko

Relevance of the topic is particularly relevant because, while there are only a few people very active right now, there always seems to be 20 or 30 lurkers looking at stuff.  That is not counting the 'bots.  It is better, all other things considered, to keep a thread relatively focused, than not.  On the other hand, I don't think that people interested in alternate topics (UFOs, Pyramids, Atlantis), are particularly concerned with more precise details (there just aren't any usually).  In some areas of knowledge the challenge is not to have more specific knowledge in an area, but rather generalized insights that can illuminate the whole.

Let's say you looked up the philosopher-mathematician Pythagoras on wikipedia and got a biography of him.  Then you look up Encyclopedia Britannica, and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, ad nauseam, and basically the same information regurgitated.  But, maybe you could look up Samos, where he was born, or Croton where he immigrated to, or Metapontum where he did, and looking at the time period, get a generalized sense of his surroundings.  It is a different angle, but it could reveal new insight into the man.  But, whereas the conclusion of such material may prove relevant, the effort in the beginning will be a digression.
Let's say you are studying Tacitus, and you find a broken inscription roughly contemporary with him that says "-TICO".  That being an end of a name.  Well, so what?  Well, what if TACITUS is a very rare name, and indeed, Roman names (in the dative) do not end in "-TICO"?  Well, then all of a sudden, the relevance can be seen between literature and inscriptions.  But, if one was just traveling down the Tacitus literary branch or inscription branch, (or the name branch).  One would probably never realize the relevance of such an inscription.  It is only in hindsight, _after_ the procedure, that one can sometimes realize thee relevance.
So, toyomotor, please indulge us a little, and give us enough rope to hang ourselves with. Hug But, yes, toyomotor is right, maintaining relevance is desirable.

Why go off an a tangent with irrelevant info when a new post could be created, opening up another field for discussion?

How many posts are in a tangent?

Did you find something particularly irrelevant?

Who decides relevance?

Why not challenge the fact before starting a topic?
