There are many fascinating and imaginative renderings of space and spaceships that really inspires the fantasy. Here are some:

Chris Foss, an icon in spaceship art. He has inspired a whole new generation of space artists, filmmakers and others:

David Hardy, also an inspiration for many:

And a true pioneer in visualizing mans future in Space, Chesley Bonestell:

Nothing beats the flying disk my friend.  Reasonably, the Germans and Canadians spent time trying to create such a flying device.

Why not a "soft" object? A spacey cloud, a swarm of particles, or even "telepathic transportation"?

We have such a thing (except for the telepathic transportation part) and they are simply called clouds. They look soft and pillowy, They are from space (our atmosphere) and they contain particles.

Clouds contain particles it picks up from earth. Clouds also have high ionic density of opposing charge from water which results in electricity. The water droplets falling down as a result of gravitation break down into yet smaller droplets with positively charged electricity while the surrounding atmosphere is negatively charged. The electric charge of droplets increases at each division into smaller units. Along with the emergence of the electrical charge as a consequence of disintegration of water droplets, the ice crystals at the upper portion of the cloud gain positive electricity charge, thus separating from the atmosphere with negative charge and increasing the electrical charge of the cloud.

Cloud
    1. A visible body of very fine water droplets or ice particles suspended in the atmosphere at altitudes ranging up to several miles above sea level.
    2. A mass, as of dust, smoke, or steam, suspended in the atmosphere or in outer space.
  1. A large moving body of things in the air or on the ground; a swarm: a cloud of locusts.
  2. Something that darkens or fills with gloom.
  3. A dark region or blemish, as on a polished stone.
  4. Something that obscures.
  5. Suspicion or a charge affecting a reputation.
  6. A collection of charged particles: an electron cloud.

Here is the ship Space Beagle, from the novel Voyage of the Space Beagle, by A.E. van Vogt, that inspired both Star Trek and Alien (and several others). Space Beagle in its turn was inspired by The Beagle, the ship Darwin travelled with.

And such is exactly the point why space, space ships, and extra-terrestrial travel is made believable  through the juxtaposition of the familiar past into the future, no matter how much very precise knowledge militates against such visions. Let us look at the contemporary "space station" and simply ask: what is its utility with respect to "travel"? And yes, iI am mad as hell the "Enterprise" landed up in New York and not Houston!

A rich man's toy set for the delights of the equally bored determined to waste wealth! That little trinket is as much a "space ship" as the X-15 was a fighter jet!

Of course, you forgot the contraption required to get that little trinket "off" the ground:

Virgin Mothership Eve, designed by Burt Rutan and financed by Richard Branson, approaches the Wittman Field site of the Experimental Aircraft Association Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin yesterday

Don't be envious, doctor. They are starting the way to the future. Wait for popular flights to space in 30 years more... if you are in this dimension, of course.

Psst, Penguin, space kills and just the level of exposure to solar radiation at high altitudes guarantee these "space tourists" an earlier demise.
