In july last year - eight and a half month ago - we did some radical changes to our community.
We changed our name, all our domains, our graphical layout - in short terms, we broke off with everything of the past....

Time to evaluate.

For starters, let me mention one of the major concerns we had at the time - our ranking with Google.
We have always used the term "History Forum" to see how well we did in a Google search, and before the change, we only rarely made it to the first page - but we feared we would lose even that rank.

Now we are constantly among the top five on page one and have been for long, so that is definitely a plus.  Also - as far as I can tell - the redirection of links to all our sites is working witout any problems - that was a concern as well.

Aside from that, let us hear what you - the staff and membership think about the change and what is even more important....

1) What other things can we do to improve our community?
2) Can YOU contribute with something to make this place even greater?

Let us have a discussion about the past, present and future....  - all opinions are welcome.

So long as the forum appears in the front page of google then there should be enough self sustaining membership growth to make the website viable. What we really need is some new blood, with new ideas. I wouldn't change much to be honest.

We should give a bit more interest over history's current effects on culture. We should able to talk for pages about a movie. For example, I was only interested in history of my own country until I start to play nice historical strategy games. A decision appears in game, "Edit de Nantes" or "Manifest Destiny"... And I said, "what is these staff? better I google it"... That's how I started to learn world history. Salute to Age of Empires 2! Dead

Parnell raises a good point about new blood. But I have noticed a marked increase in new membership over the past few months. The conversion of our web address resulted in WH becoming the underdog in many respects, as new members frequently locate a forum based on google searches. But that conversion is now paying dividends.

I would like to see a few more "Post of the Month" or "WH quote of the week" sorts of threads for posts made purely about historical things.

Raises Hand

1. One of the users bring up weekly an historical newspaper from 30+ years ago and bring up the contents in it for discussion, of course the only rule is that the newspaper should have been released on the current day. Sort of like this day and history but a little upgraded

2. We could organize a community effort to create one big triva history quiz- use that as a way to bring up subjects that dont get as much attention

3. Create a Relgion Contest
I know you are looking and your saying what the hell?
for those that love alt history make a good realistic scenario about a religion that never existed mind you this new "religion" could be a branch off of one of the OTL major ones.

First I admit to not being a heavy contributor, more a lurker. The reason being is my knowledge of all things historical is limited but with that I still have a never ending thirst to learn more. Not sure that I am getting that "need to read" on here as of late.

I feel that this site has lost a bit of the more sensible historical discussion. I gain the impression that it has reached the point where the only discussions that carry much interest are debates between those with certain nationalistic and/or regional bias and will constantly fight for that position to the bitter end. I also feel that those that should know better join in to the detriment of the site. On a personal level this is not that interesting. Maybe I am wrong though and missing something"shrug", maybe this is the way of the modern history debate. If so this is disappointing.

I will honestly say that I have no solutions but I guess will look back in and just steer clear of the threads that do not degenerate into what seems never ending attempts to gazump each other.

Hi 4ZZZ Smile

I am probably guilty of the criticism in your post. For that i am sorry. I think your right. We should be focusing more on history rather than debating the correct national/regional belief.

Please forgive me, but I don't recall what your historical interest are? So what would you like to discuss? Please do feel free too share any knowledge you have by starting a thread or joining in on the threads that you like.

Fusong, you're right about the interest quizzes raise. Thing is we used to have them, but I gather they ran into software problems that didn't get solved. I don't know what the state of play is technically, but I'd be happy to come up with a range of questions.

Current affairs topics are supposed to be restricted to people with some track record on the historical side, but there's been a tendency to introduce current topics into the historical fora and moderators including me have failed to stop it. That creates an obvious loophole that should be stopped (not a criticism but an admission of mea culpa.

Thanks for excepting the criticism as constructive but you, and anyone else for that matter, have  nothing to apologise for. These have just been observations and I may be wrong.

The threads I am linking to are via the "latest forum posts" at the bottom of the forum and had been taking little notice of where they are. I have just noticed that the Mead Hall seems to be the Forum of choice. Maybe a good spot for the "troll" style post? I just have to steer clear I suppose. With that in mind that means that the more important forums to me personally seem to be less popular? If so that is a pity.

IIRC I have started a thread and it was well represented and I learnt a fair bit. I am happy to start or join in threads, in fact I have on a limited basis. For example I asked a question in a thread on Japan a week back. I was surprised though at the lack of answers/comment. It seemed fairly innocuous a question to a layman such as I. I suppose that I thought that that was the idea of a forum of such scope as this.

...just a quick question about the Google lists.....when a WH member opens up a fresh thread, does the title of the thread feature in its 'own page' list on a Gogle search...?...

...i mention this because in the past whenever i have needed to look up something historical, the search has led often to forums where the issue is being discussed...which in turn led to a quick rummage around that site and if it seemed of interest, i would most likely join...which if i remember correctly this was how i came across the old AE site....

...i am not sure how many people search actively with the sole intention of joining a history forum, i tend to think there needs to be a hook that reels them in...???....hence my question...

....all the best....AoO...

Yes, it is as you say - the thread comes up. I some other forums (and earlier versions here as well) a topic was just a number, but if you check the address-line, you can see the reference is not a number, but the name of the topic. This makes much better results with search-engines.

Here is an example...

...thanks North, i thought as much...i was just wondering how succesful that is in drawing in new members, but i guess that 'system' would still be inundated with current affairs topics rather than the historical which does, as others have observed, need a boost here on WH...

..i still enjoy the site and i think it is managed well,.....but much like 4ZZZ, i have become more of a lurker, but while lurking i am still liking...Evil Smile...

Can we put some kind of thesaurus on the SEO to synonymise US/UK spelling?  Example honor = honour.

There is no need Zagros - Google and the other search engine have it all covered - try use the english version of honour killing, and without as much as a twinkel,  both versions are there already between the results.

They are really good at it -  catching our blunders - if you make a spelling mistake for some reason, instantly it will ask you... "did you mean...xxx" suggesting another way of spelling...

Well then, given the relationship between the warrior and poet, how about a poetry corner.

The frase "honor killing" is way too general to hope it will bring us up, there are billions of pages with that frase alone - you need to be specific when you do a search...

try a little more from the titel or headline of a topic....  and you'll see....
