Never was too big of a poster here. I've found more free time to partake recently. Hopefully, the forum can get a little more active!

Hey Panther! Good to see you, mate. Still a fair bit going on here. And the conversations that are active are substantive, which is something I can say for few other places in both the real and virtual worlds. Wink

We all hope so too. In fact we all can play our part in making this place more active by starting up more threads.

I know. I have been hearing a lot about the controversies embroiling many of our universities and the threats it poses to free speech. Microagrressions and safe zones?

Aye. That seems to be a hot topic lately.

You should start a thread, although I really doubt there would be much disagreement on the subject around here. I have yet to find a single one of my friends in academia -- who run the gamut from left to right -- who agree with the concept of limiting discussion in order to spare the feelings of a field of delicate flowers. Still, if it hasn't been brought up, we probably should have a thread here.

Yes that is quite laughable and sad. The trend has progressed in schools.

Aye. The whole thing actually has me quite alarmed. Very few in the current generation of academics, including those who unwittingly contributed to the problem, would support the mentality that has been fostered among the youth in the unis. That said, some of these youth are the next generation of academics (and a few are already there, as this has been going on for quite a bit longer than it has been in the news). This generation could be genre destroying when it comes to history, at least in the next century or so.

The professors I've spoken with about the matter are all at a loss as to how to teach when they encounter this in the classroom. So far it isn't something they encounter in every class, but it is encountered frequently enough to be alarming. The even more alarming thing is that it really only takes one student to spoil a class when it comes to this matter, and my friends are getting absolutely no support from their respective administrations.

I don't see a feasible solution in the current climate other than to pray that the students themselves can be convinced how ridiculous this attitude is. The problem is, it's very much en vogue right now, and they have an endless support group through the internet and their social media accounts, which insulates their minds from any constructive criticism.
