Could it be another good proxy of countries' internal political problems since it often captures the motives when governments fail to conceal the truth? Smile

One might think of the Buddhist monks in Vietnam, serenely and with great discipline, legs folded underneath them, going up in flames.  But, I also think of the guy(s) who light themselves on fire and instantly realize that it was a bad idea, too late to change.  Activists, wearing their cause on their shoulder, can go too far, not proving anything to anyone even to themselves.

American rating agencies often capture information about cross-border conflicts between neighboring countries. When it comes to credit assessments of the country risks, such factor as political protests with self-immolations can be viewed as a negative one. But the presence of such factor in credit models is rather beneficial for American geographical location, because the US is a waterlocked state with only 2 neighbors that exhibit very little to no threat to the US. On the other hand, any news headlines about Buddhist monks that set themselves on fire may lead to rating deteriorations for both China and India Smile

The story of Arie den Dekker from Netherlands in the above list seems very intriguing. I wonder what was so special about the murder that he witnessed?
