Given the traffic of this forum, the current split seems way too extensive and spread thin an already limited traffic. |

It's actually a net simplification, if you look at it. I understand your concern, but do not share it. Really, this should be more of a consolidation than anything. By the way, welcome to the forum! What are your areas of interest (feel free to post in the introduction threads). -Akolouthos |

Notice that we have a few new features. For starters we have points instead of posts. Ability to thank posters for what that is worth and we can rate topics.

Up in the upper left where the post time is located, there is a direct link button. What is that for?

We can link to a category - to a forum - or to a specific post.
The URL assigned to that button is a direct link to that specific post.
So if I would guide you to Ako's earlier post, I would copy thje URL from the button of his post and post it for you - like this: http://worldhistoria.com/suggestion-box_topic125313_post64113.html#64113
If you click that link it will take you directly to Ako's post - displaying it on top of your screen.

It's being so mercenary as keeps us going.
(with apologies to the late Tommy Handley.)
Now there's a reference that baffles wikipedia.
I take that last comment back. I finally tracked it down there. Edited by gcle2003 - 01 Jan 2012 at 05:33 |

Can this forum be available via the Tapatalk app for IPhone? I'm sure also for other smart phones. General mobile friendly formats could help for tablets as well.

Specifically for WANA forum section: Usually this region is referred to as MENA (Middle East & North Africa). Not sure if there's a specific reason why this convention was ignored, but I thought I'd point out that when I first began posting here, I didn't immediately notice this section, because WANA just didn't click with me, and I rarely read fine print. The designated names for the forums were established as a result of debates amongst the whole staff - and there might be some staff-members who remember why the WANA was preferred over the more universal MENA. Let us see if we get a reaction. |

Middle East is confusing, largely because without something to refer to 'East' is undefined. If you live in China Palestine is west.
Moreover life gets confusing because the term has changed its meaning over the last half-century or so and older texts (and people) still use it in the old sense where the Middle East covered from Iraq/Jordan eastward to the border of Pakistan, Pakistan across to Burma itself being India still, and the Far East starting only with Indo/China to Japan.
Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Turkey were not 'Middle East' but 'Near East' which also included Greece.
'West Asia' and 'North Africa' evade all those traps, since each mentions the continent in question, and 'West' and 'North' are obviously relative to the relevant continent. (As of course do 'East Asia' and 'SW Asia' and 'Western Europe' and so on.
Moreover, using 'Middle East', 'Near East' and so on has been seen as European elitist.

Thanks for the response.
Sometimes its better to use widely known naming conventions even if they don't strictly represent what they describe. |

We have North Asia, East Asia, South East Asia, South Asia, South Central Asia and Central Asia. West Asia has consequently kind of a natural ring to it.

What about adding a sub forum under special focus on linguistics since linguistics can tell a lot with history like where certain people moved from one place to another, or occupations, or close relationships which can be seen through linguistics.

Not to my knowledge no. I've always been scared to advertise anything and I don't have anything that needs advertising so I just don't
