It's like a British Empire Alumni society consisting of former colonies and territories.  Almost all are members.  Obviously they joined because they hate the British so much. Pfft.
"There was glory in pissing, Corabb decided as he watched the stream curve out and make that familiar but unique sound as it hit the ground." So true.

Madagascar was a French colony, and even she asked especially to join despite not formerly having been part of the Empire. How's that for popularity.

I hope you're still alive!

The British Commonwealth countries are members because they want to be.

Some original countries have either voted to break away and some have been thrown out.

And the reason that they are members of the British Commonwealth is to preserve our historical ties with England.

The same could be said of, for example, the French overseas territories.

HM Queen Elizabeth II is still Canada's head of state and I like it that way. Republics are over-rated anyways.

It is the BRITISH, not the English Commonwealth, as most people know, so 'connection with England' is not a necessary requirement.
