I have been fascinated by these people, especially considering the fact that
 
i) they were decended from the same group of Polynesian settlers as the Maroi, a sendentry people but
 
ii) despite that they reverted to a hunter gatherer lifestyle.
 
and
 
iii) their thrashing at the hands of the maroi invaders in the 1830's.
 
 
Why did they develope so differntly from their cousins? Jared Dimond thinks its due to the fact that the Chatnams could not support the crops the originals inhabitant knew, but what was stopping them from adapting?
