I teach history to children, and I am proud that they leave my classes permeated with sh*t and hatred to meet the real world.
I see my personal historic mission in bringing madness to juvenile masses. |

Well hardly WW2. The Soviet Union was invaded on one of the largest scales in history. I think some of the more recent campaigns were ill-advised or run. I suppose it seems different if you happen to be Russian and support your local Czar, but from western sidelines, the Russians don't seem to be particularly good at military adventurism.

You mean like the loss of 2 air fighters at landing on the Russian aircraft carrier nearby Syria, which made the whole world mock at Russia?

Actually I meant something on a more expansive scale. There are always embarrasing or costly gaffes in warfare.
here's one you might not have heard about. Back in the height of the Cold War, an RAF Shackleton (a post-war development of the famous Lancaster bomber) maritime recce aircraft was out patrolling the Atlantic. Ten hour flights over open ocean are somewhat dull and coming across the US Navy on manoevers, decided to make life interesting by practising an emergency approach on an aircraft carrier (landing was unlikely anyway given the size of the four engined aeroplane and lack of arrestor gear). Wheels down, landing light on, throttle down, standby to go around.... But communication was lacking. The Americans, convinced that the landing was real, pushed brand new jet fighters over the side to make the landing possible. Hey? Where are those guys going? Actually the incident is apocryphal but you get the point?

I wonder what would be the most crazy (in terms of the number of losses among soldiers or population) war or battle for the US or the UK?

American Civil War losses were bad. I don't remember how much at Shiloh, but during the night you could hear the screams of the wounded being eaten alive by wild boar. A forest fire broke out in the Battle of the Wilderness, again the wounded could not necessarily get away.

I'm honestly not sure what to suggest for the British. The Wars of the Roses got pretty nasty and the English Civil War had a spectacularly high proportion of casualties among the population of the time. I'm sure there's been a stupid situation or two over the centuries but I can't think of one right now.
